Intent on turning Frausseilles into one of the leading vineyards in south-west France
The Munich resident Ferdinand von Thun discovered the Château de Frausseilles in 1998. Along with his longtime friend Dr. Ricardo Cotarella, one of the most well-known oenologists in Italy, who is reverently known as "The Magician" or "Mister Merlot", jointly developed the vision of producing great wines here in the Gaillac. These should express their origin with finesse and independence. Powerful and with an elegant structure, they should be a contemporary version of the "Vins du Coq" with spice and minerality. The Plateau Cordais on the Hautes Côtes des Gaillac, the northern part of the appellation, with its barren, calcareous soil is considered the best terroir of Gaillac. Since the appellation rules stipulate a 60% share of local vines, but these did not meet the quality requirements of the two friends, they focused on the grape varieties that had been cultivated in Gaillac for centuries: Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah. The varietal wines from these varieties are real crus from individual vineyards, which amaze the experts: the renaissance of Gaillac has begun.
