Château Fonplégade is a historic estate in Saint Emilion that embodies the essence of elegance and tradition. With its origins dating back to the 13th century, the château’s vineyards are planted on the appellation’s coveted limestone and clay soils, producing wines of remarkable depth and finesse.
Under the meticulous stewardship of its current owners, Château Fonplégade is committed to organic and biodynamic viticulture, ensuring that each vintage reflects the purity of its terroir. The wines are known for their opulent fruit, refined tannins, and beautifully balanced structure, making them a true expression of Saint-Émilion’s excellence.
The estate was purchased from the Moueix family in 2004 by Denise and Stephen Adams and is now certified organic and biodynamic. The blend is roughly 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc and aging is 50% in new French oak barrels, 30% in one year-old barrels and 10% in concrete and 10% in amphorae. The 2019 has a great balance of plum and dark cherry fruit with some vanilla and woody spice - the aromatics are lush and giving, with subtle complexities starting to emerge after an hour open. The palate is a wave of seductive fruit and layers of tobacco and spice, with a long finish and balanced acidity, making this a prime candidate for steak or fatty meats. It's highly enjoyable now and will continue to evolve nicely over the next 5-20 years.

"The 2019 Fonplégade is elegant, refined and full of character. Sweet dark cherry, chocolate, leather, spice, menthol and licorice build effortlessly in the glass. Fonplégade is a Saint-Émilion that emphasizes elegance over sheer power."

Shows the thickly textured dark fruit of the vintage, with steeped plum and blackberry notes cruising through slowly, carried by alder, loam and tobacco threads. Gains nuance as it airs in the glass, showing light chalky minerality for energy and balance in the process.
