Subjected to the same rigour in the vineyard and winery as the first wine Chateau Rieusse
Carmes de Rieussec is the second wine of Oremier Cru Sauternes Chateau Rieussec.
Carmes de Rieussec, takes its name from the founders of the estate, the Carmelite Monks. The same care and attention that goes into the Grand Vin is also used for the second wine. A blend of 80-90% Sémillon with the rest a balance of Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle, Being owned by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (of Lafite fame) has been a boon for Chateau Rieussec. Since taking over the property in 1984, the planted vineyard area has increased from nearly 40 hectares to roughly 90 hectares today. Investment has also been made in the cellars, and the winemaking team are now better placed to work with the multiple small lots stemming from various parcels and picking runs through the vineyard.
It is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels. Notes of acacia flowers, fresh pear, candied citrus and apricots compliment a well rounded structure with tight acidity and a long, satisfying finish.
